BIG does look better financially than a lot of the other discount merchandise companies. Good financial statements. No red flags that I can see from a quick glance.

But the valuation isn't cheap enough for me.

Interesting prospect, but I'll pass. I prefer something with higher margins.

I've always been interested in BIG and its brethren in FDO and Dollar General. The issue I have with BIG specifically is when you look at the company's history its quite ugly and inconsistent until 2007. The last 3 years have looked great as Revenue Growth, FCF, FCF Margin, ROIC, etc have all drastically improved. Is this what we can expect in the future? If so, at $28, this looks like a pretty good investment. My concern (and I believe the market's) is how much of their success is because of The Great Recession? Are these former customers of Wal-Mart, Target, and more upscale retailers? Once the economy turns around, will people still shop at BIG or will they go back to shopping at the aforementioned places?

 

I've never researched BIG a great deal, so I don't have the answers to these questions. What are your thoughts?
