Value vs growth…

Star wars vs star trek…

Coke vs pepsi…

like the above 2 examples, I find it silly. To the anal personalities, it is a matter of life and death, but for me, they are the same and not worth the time to argue about.

Sorry if I offended any star trek fans haha.

My definition of value.

Value = intrinsic value is cheaper than market price with potential upside + downside limited.

Growth = something that you have to determine whether it is worth paying for. Whether the company can make returns greater than cost of capital.

Do you find the value/growth characterization to be a helpful one, or a misleading one?

I think its a misleading one. I prefer a filter process (and not a cluster approach) to sort out bad investments and i focus

on a companies business model. Early in my investment adventure i learned some hard lessons why it is not a good idea

to invest in retailers ;-)

Do you break down your investment decisions into your own categories?

No. I dont think that an investment decision would fit just one category and it is too time consuming.

Do you think it's even helpful to label or categorize an investment decision beyond "smart" or "stupid"?

I use a transaction log with comments about why i bought and sold a stock to minimize my "stupid" transactions ;-)

Been reading through Charles H. Brandes Value Investing (essentially a VI 101 course) and I've been taking notes in order to generate forum discussion.

He notes:

In recent years, it's become more popular to classify investors' approaches as being either "value" or "growth." They have become accepted as being polar opposites, almost like taking sides in a sports event: do you support "value" or "growth"? You may not be surprised that I reject this popular approach to classifying investment styles. Value and growth are not enemies, nor are they based on incompatible beliefs.

My question: do you find the value/growth characterization to be a helpful one, or a misleading one? Do you break down your investment decisions into your own categories? Do you think it's even helpful to label or categorize an investment decision beyond "smart" or "stupid"?
