Dividend is subtracted after net income.  So, tehcnically, it is not included in the calculation of owner's earnings.  My question is how we view the dividend payment.  Should we view it as a cash retained or cash outflow to attract investor?

My understanding is that Dividend is inflow that are later distributed to investors.  We can view it as inflow because it attracts investor. We can also view it as cash outflow because it is paid to investor.

What i do now to caluclate dividend stock is that i just take the automatically generated owner's earning from the spreadsheet without doing any adjustment since i think they are more like inflow than outflow.  In other word, i just view dividiend as cash retained.

What you think?
