I tried this and go to about a hundred then things just kept getting backed up and I nevered finished.

I dont think you have to go through every company though. I would still just skip over the banks and other companies I don't understand. If there are 27,000 and 7,000 were banks, that still leaves 20,000 possible opportunities to find a few gems.

In 1993 on PBS' Money World, Buffett was asked what advice he would give a new money manager.

 

Buffett: "I'd tell him to do exactly what I did 40-odd years ago, which is to learn about every company in the United States that has publicly traded securities."

Adam Smith: "But there's 27,000 public companies."

Buffett: "Well, start with the A's."

Has anyone here thought about going through the entire S&P500 index (or something similar) and looking through each company/industry? I feel like this would be a good learning exercise, because it would force me to learn about valuing bank stocks, which is something that I have touched with a 10 foot pole.

I am tempted to give this a shot so that I have a good overview of many industries and companies within it.
