I frankly didn't consider the merger aspect to this. I was actually more or less thinking in terms of buying a stock that will at least hold value and pay a steady stream of dividends. That certainly adds another dimension to this.

That relation shows up nicely. That may very well corroborate Jae's claim. On the other hand, Buffett did claim buying a great company at a fair price can be the better investment.

a lot of well known brands in there but I would say that most are pay fair value for a good company type of investments. This industry does not tend to offer much discount. Those that do are razor thin margin businesses.

Since there is a lot of "bearish" sentiment, this might be an interesting idea. If there's one thing that should hold up in an environment like this are consumer staple stocks.
But another dynamic is here. With people trying to find ways to lower costs, they may choose to purchase "store brand" items. These items are often good replacements for the name brand items but at a much lower cost.
There's a few problems I've encountered in generating ideas here though. First, many of these products are produced by much smaller, private companies. The second problem (or is it not a problem?) is that many store brand products are actually manufactured by the same companies that produce the name brand stuff.
The sort of companies I have in mind are companies like Perrigo (PRGO) which produces many OTC drugs. They even have a page on their website devoted to Store Brand Versus National Brand.
Another example is ConAgra Foods (CAG) which has some of its own name brand products but also produces many store brand products as well.
I've been having difficulty coming up with a list of options and ideas.
