I linked to this site because I am also a GRVY share holder given its current stink valuation and potential catalysts. lt sure would be nice if we can pool ideas to pick apart. It sure would save time.

We'll I'm not Canadian, I'm Swedish. Will go to Canada for a family reunion this summer though – in central Alberta.
Jae, I don't know how it is in your part of the world, but friends and former coworkers over here who works in financial companies – even in non-financial positions like software QA – still puts a lot of hurdles for private investments, including having to report all holdings and transactions for yourself and your family to the company / authorities. I prefer investing to be a "hobby" and stay in my engineering position.
Although, I must admit that I'm agreeing the the Buffet quote that says "I'm a better businesman because I'm an investor and vice versa" – when reading investment books I get new ideas for how to run my company, and my experience as businessman and engineer helps me understand the companies in which I invest.

Hi everyone
I am from Vancouver BC, so if Jae or anyone is ever in the area…
I am new at value investing but eager to learn. I love the simple ways of valuing equities like the original Graham equation.

Thanks guys. I do hope I can make it out to the east side of Canada as well.
So many places to go, so little time. I need to break free from this 9-6 daily cycle.

And the second round on my. It's nice to see a fellow Canadian here.
I'm in Newmarket myself, but have yet to find the career that I love.
Like both of you I'm passionate about investing, but don't see it as a career. The stress of other peoples money and having to live to someone elses standard doesn't appeal to me.
I also agree you do a great job here JJ. Old School Value is one of only a couple of must read blogs for me.

ahhh schucks. Thanks.
With accounting as your background you should find it easy to tear apart annual reports and financial statements! Don't forget to let me know if I make a mistake when I write about some accounting stuff.
I am self taught, so I tend to make up my own theories sometimes.

I share the same sentiments. Just substitute engineering above to accounting (specifically taxation). I've had thoughts about possibly going back to school or switching careers. As many of Buffett's shareholder letters have summed up, it's always best to work in something you love. The fact that I don't have a passion in my current field makes me approach it, like, well, a job. My feeling is that I can always use accounting as a fall back. However, it does seem that once you're labelled an accountant, it's difficult to changed that perception. The kicker to me is that I always viewed finance and accounting as working hand in hand, one doesn't really operate without the other.
I do enjoy investing, specifically value investing since it resonates with me quite well. For now, I invest on a personal level as well. I appreciate what you've done with your website and feel like it's been very useful/helpful. To your credit, there are successful practitioners that make terrible teachers. I think you'd do a fine job as both.

Hi jmoy911,
Although I've studied and practiced engineering, it's not something I want to pursue further. Sure it's stable and there are plenty of jobs for me but I don't have a passion for it as much as investing or even my own business.
If somebody offers me a job at a value investing firm, I wouldn't mind a career change but I wouldn't want to start my own fund. There are some personal and family implications involved in that and I've never felt very comfortable accepting peoples money for me to invest in.
I just enjoy helping or teaching others make money themselves. I like to think of myself more of an educator rather than practitioner. After all, those who can't do, teach.
What about yourself? What field are you in right now? and how much investing do you want to be involved in?

Hey Jae,
I noticed that your background is in the engineering field. Do you plan on pursuing something in the field of value investing career wise or will you keep investing on a personal/hobby level? If not, what's stopping you? I'm always interested in hearing peoples backgrounds/inputs on the subject.
Thanks,
Jason
