That's certainly something to consider when applying this approach. I would only suggest that's a good place to start to looking at those at a discount. There's a lot of different funds to choose from (many of which are fixed income funds) so looking at the particular holdings and investment style  of the manager is important as well.

Although Ive read that you should buy mutual funds when it is priced below NAV, I don't particularly like that approach. The stocks could be overvalued themselves which will render an incorrect NAV.

I've looked at South Korean ETF (EWY) because I am familiar with all the companies. Brazil was another one I had taken a look at.

I'd have to look at more specifics of what the financials are (that's a broad category). I haven't looked at Toyota at all but the thought crossed my mind when they made it in the news with the recalls. To be honest, they have the highest quality standards in the business and this was a bad mess up on their part. I would still buy a Toyota and I'm sure the company will do well but it may take a bit to recover.

FWIW, the fund managers hold some of their own personal wealth in their own funds so they're investing it as if its their own money. I don't know what criteria they use for finding value but their funds have a pretty decent track record so far.

Do you look at closed-end funds at all? Many CEF's sell at a discount to NAV which makes them interesting opportunities. You can search CEF's here.

I'm not a huge fan of ETF's. I think once you factor in transaction costs, you may end up paying more in fees than you would with a mutual fund (provided you can purchase them without transaction fees). Plus mutual funds allow you to easily reinvest dividends but that's just my personal preference.

Which ETF's do you look at? The only ones that ever sparked my interest were the dividend achievers one (PFM) and the fundamental weighted index ETFs like PRF.

I'm not a fund guy myself. I actually prefer ETF's over funds to be honest.

The way I have used funds is to identify the ones where the philosophy matches my own and then picking and choosing a few names that I would like to study up on. More like piggybacking tactic but it does work in a lot of the cases.

E.g. in the Oakmark fund, I see they hold Toyota and financial companies. Not something I would hold myself.

But any well managed fund is a great source of ideas. You learn a lot by trying to pick their brains as well.

I frankly don't like most stock mutual funds with the exception of a family of funds I found several months ago called Oakmark Funds.

The investment philosophy of the group is a value investing philosophy.
Most of their funds are contrentrated portfolios which is probably the only way to potentially beat the market.

One fund in particular I like (and have funds invested in) which is the Oakmark Global Fund. It holds approximately 40 issues. The fund managers can choose from US or foreign stocks as well as large, mid, or small cap issues, wherever value opportunities occur. This provides a nice, all around diversification.

OAKGX's 10 year performance is 11.69% annual return which is quite good when compared that to any standard indices (domestic or global).
