During the "when-issued" trading period, FURX (spinoff of PPDI) went from $17.60 to $9.11! This was due to all the indiscriminate selling by mutual & index funds. Now it's trading at around $19.00… classic case of an undervalued spinoff.

I might buy sooner because I would not mind owning both businesses. I need to investigate what the exact deal will be before pulling the trigger, but I have been keeping an eye on this and plan to pull the trigger should there be a sufficient sell-off.
The big problem with trying to compare it with competitors (at least, in my part of the country) is that they are either privately held (such as Quintiles) or are part of an academic organization, such as Duke Clinical Research Institute. I have seen others mentioned, such as CBL or RPS, but I know little about them. I agree that comparing its valuation with other members of the industry group is a helpful tool, but I prefer to simply compare the company's valuation to its own historical valuation levels and EPV. These are what I find more compelling.
Now that I think of it, I serve on the Community Advisory Board for a local clinical trials group, so… sorry to hold out on you, but this makes me even less inclined to discuss potential product streams. :-)

Cmon you cant leave us hanging like that :)
But after the spinoff, the price would drop for PPDI so why buy sooner rather than later?
Do you know who the main competitors are? Google is giving me names that I don't think is correct. I would like to get a rough multiples valuation of where PPDI is trading at.

The Denali presentation appears to be worth a focused look.
The thing to understand about PPDI is that they are not a pharmaceutical company. They help manage the clinical research trials FOR the pharmaceuticals companies. I am looking to add shares of them because I think they meet the criteria of what Buffett would call a "great company at a good price". I can only assume that they are selling at a discount to their historical valuations due to concerns about healthcare reform and decreased research from the pharmaceuticals during the recession. I have friends who work for them and their competition, so I will refrain from saying much more.
Here is the link to the company's announcement about the spinoff… http://investor.ppdi.com/relea…..eID=419090
Best wishes,
Jim

Thanks for this. Good presentation.
So it seems like an opportunity lies in CVC, MSG and PPDI.
Any of you guys know about the drug development of PPDI?

Do you have the link for the presentation?
So far mostly all the spinoffs I've taken a look at were pretty good plays.

Read a little about this spinoff on a Denali Investors presentation. Just starting to get familiar with special situations as I'm having a hard time finding a solid margin of safety in anything (small CoC, new investor). Has anybody carved through this pending spinoff (mid 2010)?
