- "Desired MOS" – Margin of Safety : What is the recommended % ? I understand the concept from Graham's MOS : I also understand this MAY vary user to user etc…but is there a average recommended to a new bie !! without any liabilities from your side

It depends on the company you are looking at. A microcap will require a larger MOS compared to KO.

I apply a 50% MOS to everything except companies that consistently produce FCF. My preference is to use 25% for these stables companies.

- "User Growth" – under user parameters – Row 7, colum C : I can see this being used as the expected 5 year growth. I understand the concept. Any tips on how one could arrive at 15% …instead of say 17% ..or 18%… have you used some thumb rule here ? some guidance here ?

The simplest way would be to take a linear trend, but that is basing the future of past trends which rarely occurs. The best way is to understand the company and industry.

E.g. if I was looking at housing industry, I wouldn't expect the rate of growth from the past because it was based on a bubble. Same with a fad company like HLYS or CROX.

For companies that I know nothing about, I would start off by applying the PE as the growth rate but I dislike having to enter anything above 15%. Then I learn more about the industry and adjust the growth accordingly.

 - The sheet titled "statements" uses a formula : http://quicktake.morningstar.c…..sp?Symbol="&Ticker, 32, "Fiscal Year-End:", ">Revenue".   How is the Fiscal Year End computed or where is that value for fiscaL year end picked up from ? For example in the resultant URL, if this sp sheet is refreshed today is the Fiscal year end "31 Dec 2009″ or "31 MAr 2009″ or what date ? I see some anamolies in the results of some companies and hence this question

The string is correct. The data just depends on when the filing companies submit their results to the big financial companies as well. All companies will submit their results to the SEC in a timely fashion, but the info on yahoo, morningstar or reuters won't be reflected until the company also submits the info to them.

So refreshing will only display the available info.

Can you try downloading this manual. It's an older manual for spreadsheets that do not rely on the exe install file.

Follow the step by step guide in that and you should get it working.

It seems like you haven't added the add-in to excel and your file locations may be incorrect.

Hi

Thanks for the quick reply. I tried a little more and figured out the problem…

For the benefit of other new users : Yes my mistake was the directory where the add – in was placed. The add in is to be placed in C:SMF … or else one should know enough to tweak XL and get the add in to work from a different directory

Now some more questions to the experts :

1. Some help is requested on Sp sheet "OSV_Graham_Formula_Spreadsheet-Basic.xls":

Hi

- I'm new to this website. I like your idea. But I wish to test the free sp sheets before I buy.

- I use a Win XP machine & MS Excel 2003 – SP3 version .

- I've downloaded the "..Old School Version: Benjamin Graham Stock Valuation Spreadsheet .. " spread sheet and unzipped the contents to a directory of mine.

- The files I've downloaded and unzipped are

04/02/2010  04:18 PM    <DIR>          .
04/02/2010  04:18 PM    <DIR>          ..
04/02/2010  04:18 PM                 0 list.prn
04/02/2010  04:07 PM           171,520 OSV_Graham_Formula_Spreadsheet-Basic.xls
08/12/2009  01:12 AM         2,168,320 RCHGetElementNumber-Element-Definitions.xls
04/02/2010  04:07 PM           386,560 RCH_Stock_Market_Functions.xla
11/04/2009  01:23 PM             1,463 smf-elements-0.txt
03/17/2009  05:06 PM           144,982 smf-elements-1.txt
03/17/2009  12:00 AM            79,816 smf-elements-2.txt
03/17/2009  04:55 PM           227,538 smf-elements-3.txt
03/17/2009  05:02 PM           132,550 smf-elements-4.txt
03/16/2009  01:30 AM            40,788 smf-elements-5.txt
07/18/2009  02:40 PM             6,661 smf-elements-6.txt
11/04/2009  01:49 PM         1,321,608 smf-elements-7.txt
03/17/2009  04:41 PM            35,958 smf-elements-8.txt
03/16/2009  11:59 PM            39,930 smf-elements-9.txt
03/16/2009  01:21 AM               571 smf-elements-info.txt

- I've ascertained that the *.Xla (add on) above is opened (either using File open) or using Tools -> Add – Ins and check the Stock market functions add in

- While doing all this I am connected to the net .. proof I post here.

- I open the OSV_Graham_Formula_Spreadsheet-Basic.xls files.

- I re enter the AAPL symbol & pres F 9 etc !! but nothing seems to refresh

- I get all #Name is most fields

- What am I missing ?

Any help would be appreciated

best regards
