I don't concern myself with the gains unless the price reaches intrinsic value. Even if I have 200% gains, if I strongly believe, the stock price has another 100% to go, I just leave it and let the market realize.

I only take gains IF I find another mindblowing opportunity and dont have an remaining funds.

Taking gains is perfectly fine, but as you get more experience, you'll have the conviction and the temperament to know that price meets value.

However, selling is very subjective so there are no books on it and everyone has a different theory. Some always take the gains when they have 50% guaranteed to make sure their profits are locked in, but this is something that you'll have to define based on your own character and personality.

I have a couple of questions concerning the proper time to sell. Recently I bought a stock that went up 30% in a month, then it proceded to decline 19%. As a value investor I am looking at long term profits, and I know there are going to be ups and downs in the price of the stock. However, I considered this stock to be a "cigar but" investment. Should I have taken the gain and looked for other opportunities? If this were a stock I considered severly undervalued and potential to make huge gains (30% I think is a nice gain though) should I have also pulled out? I am a fairly new investor and this is a topic I would greatly enjoy to hear your words of wisdom on. Also, is there a book that gives great detail on this subject?
