Book Review: The Art of Short Selling

The Art of Short Selling, by Kathryn Staley, is by no means about short selling. If I had to sum it up in a few words, I would say the book is focused on hardcore fundamental analysis. It points all readers in the direction of discovering and analysing fundamental problems with a company. The book clearly states that one should never short a good company with temporary issues or just because a company seems overpriced.

There is no mention of technical analysis, trends or volume. The true method of short selling described is based on an extremely detailed fundamental analysis, which is why I immediately purchased the book. The book describes everything that enterprising investors should do.

Analysis Now Includes Spider Graphs

I find it much easier to see and understand graphs and lines rather than a row of numbers next to each other. I have to admit that my investing techniques still needs work. So in an effort to iron out some kinks, I will now implement a spider chart (Excel calls it a radar chart) when I analyze companies.

Here is an example. Note the difference between AeroGrow (AERO) (one of my many mistakes) and Coca Cola (KO).

Forbes Best Small Companies: Part 4

This is a continuation of my search for the best small companies from the 200 listed in Forbes 2008.

You can refer to the previous results here: 1-15 | 16-32 | 33-70 |

The companies ranked 71-130 has yielded 8 results. To recap, below are the criterias of how the companies are being filtered.

  1. Immediately exclude financials (don’t understand or know how to value them)
  2. Run the companies through the intrinsic value spreadsheet with the PE as the growth rate, but capped at 15%. The selected companies shall exhibit;
    • Positive, consistent and growing cash flows.

Free Cash Flow, Tax and Capital Expenditures

I wanted to add some additional points on FCF which I brought up in analysing the Statement of Cash Flows before moving onto the future posts on balance and income statements.

Tax Adjustments

If a company receives a tax deduction when employees exercise their stock options, does this count as cash from operating activities? Or if the company defers its income taxes to a later period, does this count as cash from operations? I don’t think so.

Puget Energy Merger Approved and Review

The Puget Energy merger has finally been approved on December 30, 2008. After more than 1 year since I first got wind of this deal, the entire deal is expected to close in 2 weeks for $30 cash. Surprisingly, PSD is still trading at a discount to its final closing price. It is currently at $27.50. This still leaves room for a 9% gain with all uncertainty eliminated..

In my last post on PSD, let’s take a step back and review what happened, how I went about doing things, what went right and what went wrong.

Categorising Your Portfolio

I have 1 stalwart, 3 fast growers, 3 turnarounds and 1 cyclical.
For those that have read One Up On Wall Street by Peter Lynch, you’ll know that I’m referring to the 6 categories that he assigns to the companies in his portfolio. As I was reading this section, I had never thought about classifying my positions in terms of growth and return potential. I always looked at the different industries that made up my portfolio and it was refreshing for me to see it another way.

A Tender That Was Too Good To Be True

A Tender That Was Too Good To Be True

Silly me. First of all, sorry to disappoint those who were interested in what was supposed to be my first tender. I was too worked up about the odds and closing date of the tender that I completely glossed over the finer details. I didn’t purchase anything today and thankfully, it was a “free” lesson. Jazz Technologies Merger Arbitrage

Jazz Technologies Merger Arbitrage

Jazz Technologies (JAZ) announced on May 19, 2008 that they are being acquired by Tower Semiconductor (TSEM). The final decision of the deal is expected to announced dependent on the results of the special meeting of shareholders scheduled for September 17, 2008. When I started to look into this merger yesterday, the spread was at 15%. Today, August 13, the spread fluctuates between 6-9%. However, this still comes out to an annualized gain in the range of 40-72%.

A Company That Sounds Like A Transformer: K-Tron

In May I wrote about K-Tron, a boring niche company that deals with material handling machines and crushing equipment. 3 months later, to my surprise and pleasure, the company has kept chugging along to new highs.

Big Companies

Most of you may have noticed that I usually write about small companies. Although I’m vested in United Health, which is the largest company I own, I don’t bother writing my own analysis on them. There are already too many analysts and individual investors writing about the company that I just don’t feel the need.
