“The problem is that the majority of podcasts are pure noise.”

That’s what Jae told me when I was working on this list.

How true that turned out to be. From a couple of dozen shows on my initial list, only a handful passed the test and made it to this list.

The reason is that it’s difficult to explain an investment thesis or concept just through audio.

Try explain what CROIC is and the formula associated with it to somebody who is listening in their car or working out.

It’s overwhelming.

So that’s why most podcasts (finance included) are limited to high level discussions, basic concepts and what the markets are doing.

But if you drive a lot, might as well make the most of your time with useful content.

These podcasts were selected after many hours of searching and listening to the content to make sure it wasn’t filled with fluff and noisy content.

Listen to these podcasts when you have downtime like during a commute, waiting in line, or mowing the lawn.

And here they are…

The Top 4 Practical Podcasts for Value Investors

#1. Value Investing Podcast by Beyond Proxy

value investingFull of insightful interviews from authority figures and investment managers by our good friends at BeyondProxy.

If you want to pick the brain of brilliant value investing minds, then this is one podcast that I highly recommend you listen to.

Here’s how they explain their podcast.

Whether you are a fund manager, investment advisor or individual investor, you will benefit from the wisdom and ideas of highly successful investors.

#2. Accounting Tools Podcast

accnt toolsThis is actually an accounting podcast. And that’s why it’s as good as it gets.

The episodes are under 10 minutes and focus on one single topic. e.g. if you want to know more about Accruals and Deferrals, there’s an episode for that. It’s more like an audio textbook.

The podcast has been downloaded more than 2.1 million times. It covers best practices and accounting standards, as well as accounting technology, acquisitions, controls, closing the books, financing, investor relations, metrics, payroll, and more.

If you want to improve your language of business, check it out.

#3. Peter Schiff Show

Peter SchiffEven as a value investor, you can’t completely ignore economics. Focusing on the business is important for sure, but it’s also important to know and understand what’s going on.

When it comes to financial information packaged in a colorful way with a knowledgeable host, Peter Schiff delivers.

Peter Schiff is an economist, financial broker/dealer, author, frequent guest on national news, and host of the Peter Schiff Show Podcast. He follows up his daily two-hour radio show with podcasts focusing on weekly economic data analysis and unbiased coverage of financial news, both in the U.S. and global markets

#4. The Dave Ramsey Show

dave ramseyHow can you not include Dave Ramsey as a finance podcast recommendation.

Author of the Total Money Makeover, Dave Ramsey, sits down and gets into the nitty-gritty of personal finance. I much prefer Dave over Suze Orman too.

Millions listen to The Dave Ramsey Show every day for common-sense talk on money. Listeners are also tuning in to hear real callers share real stories about their lives and families.

This radio show is syndicated on more than 500 radio stations and a listener base of over 8 million people.

Additional Worthy Mentions

While not part of the top 4 podcasts, the following podcasts deserve a recommendation.

Again, each podcast has to deliver on insightful and deep content.

No frothy, mind dumbing fluff.

The Investors Podcast

The Investors PodcastThis is a new podcast with only a handful of episodes. But the content is rich and relevant to value investing so be sure to check it out.

The show’s premise is simple:

We study billionaires. We talk about the books they read and we interview the people they like to interact with.

The hosts delve inside the mind of the successful and wealthy and try to deconstruct their secret to financial success. They get in depth about founders like Jeff Bezos to peak performance advocate, Tony Robbins.

InvestTalk

investtalkThis is one of the more all round shows. Includes everything from earnings discussions, portfolio balancing, market news, and what the economy is doing.

InvestTalk is the place to become a better investor where reason and common sense prevail. This forum allows listeners to gain knowledge, exchange ideas and become current on relevant investment news.

Other topics that will interest you include practical tips on how to start a portfolio from zero, actionable contrarian ideas for the year, and some education on how to spot a weak portfolio.

Planet Money

planet moneyThe topics vary with this one but there’s a ton of very interesting topics. One that hit home for is “Why We Sign Up For Gym Memberships But Never Go To The Gym“.

Quality of production is excellent and if you don’t want heavy hitting investing information all the time, then this one is worth listening to.

Imagine you could call up a friend and say, “Meet me at the bar and tell me what’s going on with the economy.” Now imagine that’s actually a fun evening. That’s what we’re going for at Planet Money.

Stacking Benjamins

stack benAnother personal finance podcast with practical advice. Easy to listen to and like.

Of all finance podcasts, personal finance make up the majority, but Stacking Benjamins is upbeat and relatable.

Stacking Benjamins is a story-telling site. Joe Saul-Sehy and Shannon McLay share thoughts on recent financial news reported in the media. In a world of hard-hitting, deep-thought financial stories, SB’s goal is lighter, more relaxed entertainment about money.

If you want to enjoy your financial news while heading home, try this podcast.
